Why Your Boiler Pressure Keeps Dropping (And What It Means for Your Home in North Yorkshire)

If you’ve noticed your boiler pressure keeps dropping and you’re constantly topping it up, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common heating issues we see across Scarborough, Pickering, Whitby and the wider North Yorkshire area — especially during winter.

While repressurising your boiler occasionally is normal, regularly losing pressure is not something you should ignore.

Here’s what it means, what you can safely check yourself, and when it’s time to call in a professional.

What Should Boiler Pressure Be?

For most UK homes, boiler pressure should sit between:

1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold

When the heating is on, it may rise slightly, this is normal. But if it keeps falling below 1 bar, your heating system won’t work efficiently and may shut down completely.

If you’re constantly seeing low pressure warnings, there’s likely an underlying issue.

Why Does Boiler Pressure Keep Dropping?

1. A Small Leak in the System

Even a tiny leak in a radiator valve, pipe joint or underfloor pipework can cause pressure loss over time.

Leaks aren’t always obvious. In many North Yorkshire homes, especially older properties, pipework may run beneath floorboards or through walls, making slow leaks difficult to spot.

Signs to look for:

  • Damp patches

  • Stained ceilings

  • Warped flooring

  • Drips around radiator valves

If you suspect a leak, it’s best to get it checked before it worsens.

2. Recently Bled Radiators

If you’ve bled your radiators and forgotten to top the system back up afterwards, pressure will drop.

Bleeding releases trapped air, but it also slightly reduces system pressure. After bleeding, you should always check the boiler gauge and top up using the filling loop if needed.

If pressure continues to fall days later, something else may be going on.

3. A Faulty Pressure Relief Valve

The pressure relief valve (PRV) is a safety device that releases water if the system becomes over-pressurised.

If this valve becomes faulty or stuck slightly open, it can cause constant pressure loss. You might notice:

  • Water dripping from the external overflow pipe

  • Pressure dropping overnight

This isn’t something that can be fixed with a simple top-up, it requires inspection.

4. Expansion Vessel Problems

Inside your boiler is an expansion vessel. Its job is to absorb pressure changes as water heats and expands.

If the expansion vessel fails:

  • Pressure rises quickly when heating is on

  • Pressure drops rapidly when heating is off

  • You may find yourself topping up weekly

This is a common issue during colder months when boilers are working harder across homes in Scarborough and surrounding areas.

5. Corrosion or Sludge Build-Up

In older heating systems, sludge can create blockages and pressure irregularities. Over time, corrosion weakens components and increases the chance of small leaks.

We regularly see this in older North Yorkshire properties that haven’t had recent system flushing or servicing.

Is It Safe to Keep Topping Up the Boiler?

Topping up occasionally is fine.

Topping up frequently is not.

If you are repressurising your boiler every week, or even every few days, you’re masking the real issue. Constant topping up introduces fresh oxygen into the system, which can accelerate corrosion and lead to more expensive repairs later.

If you’re unsure, it’s better to have it checked before the problem escalates.

When Should You Call a Heating Engineer?

You should arrange a professional check if:

  • Pressure keeps dropping after topping up

  • You notice water from the overflow pipe outside

  • The boiler shuts down repeatedly

  • Radiators are cold despite normal settings

  • You’re unsure how to safely repressurise the system

Most pressure-related issues can be diagnosed quickly and resolved before they turn into a breakdown.

Boiler Pressure Problems in Scarborough & North Yorkshire

Cold weather puts extra strain on heating systems. In areas like Scarborough, Whitby, Pickering and the surrounding villages, we often see pressure issues appear during prolonged cold spells.

Older homes, long pipe runs, and systems that haven’t been serviced recently are particularly prone.

A quick inspection now can prevent a complete boiler failure when you need your heating most.
